Standard Network/Local Area Network (LAN) Network Hubs Simple hubs repeat the signal going to them which allows networking between multiple NICs (network interface cards) to form a network. They are typically cheaper than switches, but switches offer better performance. Routers & Bridges Routers / Bridges are used to connect two different networks. Often these networks use different networking types. The most common type of router is a Cable / DSL router which is used to share internet access. Network Switches Switches provide the best network experience as they intelligently route traffic to the proper ports instead of just repeating. Note that many routers have small (4 or 8) port switches integrated into them so a switch may not always be needed. Patch Panels Patch panels give you a base from which to "patch" the network jacks in your wall to your switch, router, and sever. They are essential for server rooms to provide easy connection and reduced switch wear and tear. Wireless Networking (WiFi) Wireless Adapters / Cards Wireless Cards Wireless Network cards connect directly into a free slot on a PC. They are relatively easy to install and are the best choice for networking PCs permanently using Wireless. USB Wireless Adapters Simple, easy to use adapters which connect to PCs / Notebooks via a USB Port Routers / Bridges Routers / Bridges are used to connect two different networks. Often these networks use different networking types. The most common type of router is a Cable / DSL router which is used to share internet access. Wireless Print Servers Wireless Print servers allow a printer to be networked wirelessly without having to place a PC in-between the printer and the network. Wireless Access Points / Extenders Access points provide a central base for your wireless network much the same as a switch / hub on a wired network. As with hubs / switches access points extend range, but there are also devices that only do range (no access point capability).
